Culture in Yogyakarta

overcast 27 °C

We find ourselves immersed in Javanese culture here in Yogyakarta. There are many unique and wonderful experiences to enjoy!Malioboro_street.jpg
Our major stop of the day was on Malioboro Street, the hub of shopping! It is 2 km in length and home to hundreds of shops with many local artisans. It is important to haggle here, at times it felt uncomfortable, but they will take you for all you are worth if you don't haggle with them. They don't mind, they expect it. We picked up some great souvenirs for our friends back home including some funny t-shirts (they have a different sense of humour over here!) as well as some beautiful silver jewellery which was ridiculously cheap! We thought it was time we tried some local cuisine. One of the dishes we both really enjoyed was Gudeg. It is a curry of jackfruit, chicken and egg served over rice. It DOES NOT look appetizing at all, it is mostly a brownish looking slop, but it is so delicious! A must to try!Gudeg.jpg
Make sure you visit only well-known places serving food as there are literally hundreds of stalls offering inexpensive food. Trust us, just because its cheap does not mean it will be any kind of good!
