Yogyakarta

sunny 30 °C

So we have left Jakarta behind for some well needed fresh air! We took the bus to Yogyakarta and visited the historic Borobudur Temple. The monument is a shrine to Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgramige. It is decorated with 504 Buddha statues. For centuries the temple lay hidden under layers of volcanic ash and jungle growth. In 1814, Lieuenant Governor-General Thomas Stamford Raffles was informed of a big monument in the jungle. He sent an engineer to investigate and along with 200 other men, they cut down trees, burned vegetation and dug away the earth to reveal the monument. It is the most visited tourist attraction in Indonesia and well worth the visit. The monument itself has been bombed many times over the years, yet still stands.
